Things to be aware of:

When looking at waterfowl,

ALWAYS

take a parent or sensible adult. It's much safer, and besides, they need the exercise!

NEVER

be tempted to walk on any body of frozen water ~ certainly not without diving qualifications and proper S.C.U.B.A.* gear.

*Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus.

At this point, my archaic - make that my antediluvian - software decided to stop co-operating, so I can no longer link to bigger pictures. I can still post the pictures though.

The Ruddy Duck ~ or...

The Webmistress's Tale.

Many years ago Many MANY years ago, when I was about twelve years old, I was taken to Sir Peter Scott's wildlife reserve at Peakirk near Peterborough. When we were "nearly there"TM we passed a wayside inn.
According to the sign outside, it rejoiced in the name of 'The Ruddy Duck'. Said duck looked more like something from an alien planet!
First thoughts were that Mein Host had a pretty whacky sense of humour. Later, we cooncluded that he was well ticked off by the copious amounts of bird poo... The ruddy duck seemed to be the dominant species there.
