About The Luttrell Psalter

Ploughing from The Luttrell Psalter

This has been updated and transferred from the 2004 Archive.

If you looked at that last item, on April 19th, you might be wondering ‘What is a "psalter"?'

It's a book containing the psalms of the Bible, in this case one illustrated in the 1300s for Sir Geoffrey Luttrell of Irnham, Lincs. It can be seen in the British Library in London, which is a 5-minute walk out of Kings Cross station - turn right out of the station, and keep going, past St. Pancras.

It has a good coffee shop. Don't miss the ‘Turning the Pages' project in the Library, in a room just off where the manuscripts are kept; in this, you can see on computer screen many more of the pages of the Psalter than the two on view, with audio commentary.

Nick's talk should interest calligraphers as well as country-lovers. Also doodlers of weird monsters - get some new ideas - don't miss this talk!

Updates on The Luttrell Psalter - 1

I went to London on the 31st January, and popped into the British Library to pay homage to the Luttrell Psalter. To my dismay, I couldn't find it in its usual place. Enquiring at the information desk, I was told that it had been out on loan somewhere since September, but they didn't know where, or when it would be back.

So, sorry if anyone has made a special effort to see it; I can't think that it will be away for much longer, but if you do go to London wanting to see it, check with the Library first.

Updates on The Luttrell Psalter - 2.

If you didn't manage to get to Nic Lance's talk, you'll be interested to hear that a new museum is soon to open in Lincoln, just below the Usher Gallery. Nic hopes that this museum may be able to house the British Library 'Turning the Pages' facility on the Luttrell Psalter, in which the latest computer technology enables you to get as close as possible to 'turning the pages' of this wonderful artefact.

Updates on The Luttrell Psalter - 3.

Jennie asked me about the 'Turning Pages' version of the Luttrell Psalter. This was new to me, but she pointed me in the right direction and I found it. I'm not sure if it will work here as it's a [T.M] function, and to view it, I had to install Adobe Shokewave and sign up for this, that and t'other, but here goes...

::tests it and finds it works for me::

This may well be because I've installed the right software. (I are not a techie!) So if it doesn't work for you, this is how I got there:

1. Type "British Library" "Luttrell Psalter" into Google.
2. Click on the second (indented) link: Turning the Pages™, the British Library. This takes you to the Online Gallery Main Page.
3. Find GLIMPSES OF MEDIEVAL LIFE - Selections from the famous Luttrell Psalter. This is the third link down in the third column along and you have to scroll down a bit.
4. Now you're on your own as you get a mini-screen that asks you what your connection speed is and you take it from there.

Good luck!... 8-)
